During his inaugural address<\/a>, President Trump\u00a0promised to deport \u201cmillions and millions of criminal aliens.\u201d I have a new essay<\/a> exploring this premise. In it, I note:<\/p>\n

There are not \u201cmillions and millions\u201d of removable noncitizens who have criminal convictions.<\/li>\n

Trump has rescinded requirements to focus on public safety threats.<\/li>\n

Trump is mandating<\/a> ICE officers arrest a certain number of people per day, even if the officers think the arrests are unjustified.<\/li>\n
One report found<\/a> that only half of those arrested on one day last week had a criminal conviction or pending criminal charges.<\/li>\n
A new report<\/a> not available at the time of my piece includes data showing that a majority of the 8,200 arrested do not have a criminal conviction of any kind.<\/li>\n
Trump is redefining<\/a> an alien with a \u201ccriminal record\u201d to mean anyone here illegally, even as he takes away people\u2019s legal status<\/a> to make them here illegally.<\/li>\n
Trump is diverting<\/a> criminal law enforcement to work on arrests of low-level immigration offenders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
